As an adopted child myself, I would like to point out that one cannot simple adopt on the spot, and have to go through a lot of screening, tests, and parental classes to be allowed to adopt a child. Before then, you might even have to get a foster parent license before you can be approved for complete custody.

There’s a lot of legal hoops to jump through, so the implication that Darkwing not only had to create a civilian identity to adopt Gosalyn, but also had to obtain a steady income to be a middle class citizen to support raising her, went to parenting classes to learn how to handle her, and overall had to completely change his life because he couldn’t stand the idea of her not having someone to protect her and look after her… Well, that’s just a whole layer of warm fuzzies that you might have not considered before. 😛
